Taking photos of children is perhaps the most fun thing we do. The key here is to get to know the little guys and girls and get a rapport with them. The best approach is to make the kids think it’s some kind of game or party. It’s a bit like hosting a kid’s party really. Angela normally works with the photographer here and plays hide and seek with the teddy and kids while the photographer plays the fool not knowing where the teddy is. “It’s behind you”.

We need to trick the smaller children to look in to the camera and to make their smile genuine. We can’t say to a small child. “More happy” or “Look to the camera and smile”. That just won’t work. We hide the teddy behind the photographer so the kid ends up secretly knowing where the teddy is while the photographer says “I can’t see the teddy”. Angela brings the teddy in and out of view of the child and they end up smiling and looking right at the camera or off camera with a perfect smile. Of course sometimes the parents do this job for us once they see how it works.

Other things we can do are to play dancing games, tickling games or playing with toys. The most important thing is to get children looking natural and with genuine emotions of joy.

Of course it doesn’t always work and some children are really camera shy no matter what. Some children just are not comfortable at all in a strange room. In this situation we have the distinct advantage of having fully mobile lighting and backgrounds. Providing there is room we can set up for a fantastic studio shoot in your own home.
